The history of sailing terms in greek language.comparison with other nautical nations.

(note that i am aware i m jumping on several subjects ,and might seem not related to each other ,please give it a second thought)

This goes out to my friends who have been told (by me ) so many times why a person can not own a boat in greece, and always thought i was overstating the situation .
So now we have new ,even higher taxes for the owners of floating devices. If you own a 3 meters boat ,you ve got to pay 4000 euros a year as a luxury tax.
If you ask for a 10 meter boat, the answer is 8.000 euro per year.well,at least this year....because propably next year the prices wil go up....
And all this gives me the chance to speak about the way that in Greece (and maybe in other not so evolved countries),the few rich ,keep away from the sea the simple people. How ,through the years and using the high cost of maintenance/use of a boat and the non existent facillities, they managed to create a nation which even though surrounded by water ,and has a history of sailing ,is now totally disconected from the sea.
Greeks nowdays ,see all those who own a boat as rich, this is what the taxes have created.a fase impression ,that leads people to assumptions that noone cleas out ,or clarifies.
the rich, the few ,the perverts who seek profit and fame, managed with this brain washing (,that its very expensive to have aboat ,that you must be out of your mind,) to get the people to a point that even in literature or every day life ,words (as an indication ) about sealife have faded away.
In contrast to the UK for example where even the last person knows seamanship terms,in poems you meet descriptions of realistic parts of sailing boats, and in general ,the english are clrearly a nautical nation ,as they live on an island.Where as greeks ,who have thousands of islands ,and kilometers of coastline, they can not recognise even what the word mast,or sail mean...
and this was all the result of the high taxation and high costs (due to import taxes) of spare parts .
Why am i talking about this ?
well i have experienced the exact same situation when i was 30 years old and had the idea to buy a sailing boat.i went to my friend mike, who was a skipper back then (professional,he started sailing as a means of earning a living ).I went to him with my idea, asking for advise ,for which boat is the best to buy and i ended up with a broken dream.his immediate response to my questiuon was :are you crazy?can you afford  5 million drachmas a year ?(it was still drachmas back then ,and 5 mill was a lot of money ,a car costed about 1.5 mil )..so he started throwing at me all the problems the costs ,and his advise was i dont want to own a boat ,when i want to sail ,i get a job and break someone elses boat.....
the sailors amongst you ,propably already are throwing up with the attitude,i didnt know better ,i trusted the guy and gave up my dream.
until i found myself in UK years later ,started to enquire about sailing boats ,and in less than 6 months ,i had not only bought a boat ,but i had equipped it,reffited it,and was sailing south from UK,never to return again(on a boat that is)
and i found out first hand that all the myths about the high costs ,have no ground to stand on.
and since i ,with my limited budget ,managed to own a sailing yacht, with less than what a car costs ,managed to sail around europe for 6 years on 500 euros a month,i bet there are thousands out there who d like to sail ,have enough but never heard the truth.because another thing is that those who have a boat ,usually in greece are the neo rich ,these idiots who got money lately (usually by defrauding the state),and buy a boat to show off.and they d never give the infoi m giving ,maybe because they dont have a clue, since they pay their way around boats.where some of us ,just put in a lot of work.personal work and affection, and love for the boat.but if youwant to find out ,try it.i m available for free info and advice if you think you d like to have a second opinion,by someone who knows what he s talking about, and has nothing to gain or lose.for me the best pay is to see happy people materialising their long lost dream ,and sail away in the sunset one day from Mallorca's portocolom.
thats beauty and logic in one for me.the logic of living your life the way you want,so you can be productive and happy .as you ve never been until now.not really.never .i know,i ve been there.
And i might seem preoccupied against the rich and that i am making up scenarios ,but i m not trying to say it was a conspiracy.i m only trying to point out the reasons i see for the loss of the richness of sea lingo from greek language today.its losing part of our heritage. So it is important ,a lot more important that most people in greece understand today.....We became poorer by excluding ourselves from the sea and its pleasures and agonies.
There are people like the french who have as a society this must at least one time in their lifetime sail around the world.this is a norm for frenchmen ,even today it s the dream of most french .instead in greece the dream is to get a job in another country to escape poverty...or some years ago to stay in greece and steal from the nation if you can.
thats enough talking up my ass for one post ....:)

It s all the Greek's fault

Who is responsible for the invention of things that today hurt humanity, like hedge funds and futures contracts?

Aristotle described the story of Thales, a poor philosopher from Miletus who developed a "financial device, which involves a principle of universal application". .
Thales used his skill in forecasting and predicted that the olive harvest would be exceptionally good the next autumn. Confident in his prediction, he made agreements with local olive press owners to deposit his money with them to guarantee him exclusive use of their olive presses when the harvest was ready. Thales successfully negotiated low prices because the harvest was in the future and no one knew whether the harvest would be plentiful or poor and because the olive press owners were willing to hedge against the possibility of a poor yield. When the harvest time came, and many presses were wanted concurrently and suddenly, he let them out at any rate he pleased, and made a large quantity of money.[1]
